What you can change
Reach the range. Don’t worship a stretch.
Genetics set about 80% of adult height. The rest is whether the child is well-fed, well-slept, free of chronic disease, and not in an energy deficit. Hanging from a bar does not reopen growth plates.
Peak height velocity years. Calories and sleep are non-negotiable. Do not cut weight for a sport.
01 Deep-sleep GH pulse
Protect the night
The biggest growth-hormone pulse of the day rides on slow-wave sleep in the first third of the night. Irregular bedtimes blunt it.
- Same lights-out time 7 nights a week (weekend drift under 60 minutes).
- Dark, cool room. Phone charges outside the bedroom.
- Ages 6–12: 9–12 hours. Ages 13–18: 8–10 hours (AASM / AAP).

02 Fuel the growth plates
Eat like someone who is building bone
Protein raises IGF-1. Calcium, vitamin D, zinc, and iron matter when they are missing. Extra shakes do not make a well-fed child taller.
- Protein at each meal (eggs, dairy, fish, beans, meat) — not one giant dinner.
- Daily dairy or fortified alternative + outdoor daylight for vitamin D.
- Do not diet hard during a growth spurt. Energy deficit delays puberty.

03 Load the skeleton
Play that stresses bone
Running, jumping, soccer, basketball, and racquet sports send osteogenic signals. Extreme under-eating in aesthetic sports can slow growth.
- 60 minutes of mixed play most days, with some jumping or sprinting.
- Supervised lifting is fine. It does not fuse growth plates (NSCA 2009).
- Red flag: chronic exhaustion, missed periods, or dropping percentiles.

04 Stand the height you already have
Stretches that change the tape, not the bones
Hanging and stretching do not lengthen femurs. They undo the 1–3 cm you lose to a tucked pelvis, a hunched thoracic spine, and tight hip flexors.
- Wall stand: heels, hips, ribs, and head against a wall for 60 seconds, 3× a day.
- Hip-flexor half-kneeling stretch, 45 seconds each side after sitting.
- Dead hangs only if shoulders are healthy — they decompress posture, not growth plates.
Clinical reality: epiphyseal plates close after puberty; apparent height is postural.
